Definitely the engine, makes all the difference driving it over the original 1FZ.
— Alex Ferrari
Champagne paint, 35s and a whole lot of LS. Alex Ferrari's 1994 LandCruiser 80 GXL has been in his hands for five years, bought bone stock in the ACT and built piece by piece into one of the hardest 80s getting around. The ALEX80 plates have seen everything from Canberra backroads to the palm trees at the tip of Cape York.
The original 1FZ is long gone. In its place sits a 6.2L LS3 backed by a 6L80E six speed auto, with a built top end running a high RPM cam, lifters and retainers. It breathes through a custom twin 2.5 inch 304 stainless V-band exhaust and a Radius Fabrications 4 inch long entry snorkel. Ask Alex for his favourite mod and there is no hesitation: the engine, it makes all the difference over the old 1FZ. And he is not done. There is more spice coming, something about 416.
Underneath, a 4 inch lift rides on Superior Engineering 2.5 inch remote res shocks with 12 inches of travel and Dobinsons 100kg springs. Braced diffs, Kinselas flipped long arms and Rampt panhard risers keep it all pointing straight. Rolling stock is 35x12.5 Nitto Trail Grapplers on 17x9 KMC Grenade Crawl beadlocks at negative 38 offset.
Lighting is the signature. Bushdoof 4x6 Angry Eye headlights sit in the front end behind a Slinky Customs bar running G5 pod lights, with tinted Bushdoof tail lights finishing the rear above The Cruiser Company bar and a 6ft quick disconnect Bushdoof whip off the back. Rock lights wash the wheel wells in colour at camp, with a CX6 RGBW upgrade next on the list, and a Stedi ST-X 50 inch light bar handles the long distance work up top.
The touring setup is just as sorted. Radius Fabrications slim line roof rails carry an Outback Tourer 1.2 X tent and 180 degree freestanding LED awning, fed by a 310Ah custom lithium battery and 200W of Roam solar, with RV Storage Solutions drawers, an Engel 30L and a Dometic 55L keeping everything cold. Inside it gets properly custom: VF Commodore seats, door cards by Zac Sultana, a custom audio system, a 300 Series GR steering wheel with working paddle shifters and a Polaris Ultramaxx 13.1 inch head unit custom mounted in the dash. Favourite camp spot? Punsand Bay, because of the pizzas.
