Patrol GQ

Four and a half years is a long time to spend on one truck, and Mick Fares' 1992 Nissan Patrol GQ wears every day of it. What started as an honest QLD workhorse is now a Barra swapped, coilover sprung, custom tubbed single cab that turns heads in the shed and at the top of Sundown National Park.

The old motor is gone. In its place sits a Ford 4.0L Barra backed by a manual FS5R50 gearbox, tuned and breathing through a custom exhaust. Ask Mick what has been done to it and the answer is short and honest: all of it.

Underneath is where the GQ gets serious. Up front it runs Dobinsons coilovers and hydraulic bump stops on a high steer setup, with Buds long arms, a relocated panhard and Buds chassis bracing. Out back it is Dobinsons coilovers and hydros again over a custom 4 link and custom long arms, with Buds diff bracing, a Trailsafe fuel cell relocation and hill limiting straps. All up it sits on a 4 inch lift, rolling 17x9 negative 22 Lenso wheels wrapped in 35/12.5R17 Predator MTs.

Lighting is the signature. Mick runs Bushdoof GQ Patrol Turbine headlights up front, that unmistakable turbine ring lighting the old Patrol face up at night, with CX6 RGBW rock lights washing colour under the guards at camp.

Inside it is just as custom. Rikki bucket seats, diamond stitched door cards and console, a custom steering wheel and a Polaris head unit run the cabin, with a CSS Touring rooftop tent up top for the trips away. Mick's favourite mod is the tub itself, and he is nowhere near finished. Asked what is next, the answer says everything about him: build another car and do it all again.
