Y61 Series 4 Tail Light Installation Guide

Upgrading your 2004-onward Nissan Patrol GU (Y61) tail lights is one of the easiest ways to modernise the rear end. The new Bushdoof Y61 Series 4 Tail Lights not only sharpen the look but also improve brightness, reliability, and safety. Here’s a quick step-by-step guide to get them installed properly.

What You’ll Need

  • Basic socket set
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Electrical tape (optional)
  • Your new Y61 S4 Tail Lights (pair)

Step 1: Remove the Old Tail Lights

Open your Patrol’s rear doors and locate the two 10mm bolts that secure each tail light behind the boot trims (you’ll need to remove the bottle jack on one side). Once the bolts are out, gently pull the light housing straight back. There are a few plastic clips holding it in place.

Step 2: Disconnect the Factory Plug

With the housing free, locate the factory plug connection. Press the tab and unplug it. If your vehicle has had any wiring modifications in the past, double-check the connections and take note of how they’re run before proceeding.

Step 3: Transfer the Metal Bracket

Remove the metal bracket from your original tail lights and fit it to the new Bushdoof lights using a Phillips screwdriver.

Step 4: Plug In the New Light

Connect the new Y61 S4 Tail Light plug directly into your factory socket. It’s a simple plug-and-play fit if your Patrol had functional factory tail lights.
If your wiring has been modified or is missing, you may need to run custom wiring from the rear bumper or trailer plug.
If only one plug is being used, the supplied lead can be used to bridge power from one tail light to the other.

Step 5: Fit the New Light

Slide the new light housing back into position, ensuring the locating pins line up with the body holes. Once seated correctly, reinstall the bolts and tighten them evenly. Keep them snug, not over-tight.

Step 6: Test Everything

Turn on your park lights, brake lights, reverse lights, and indicators to confirm all functions are working. If anything doesn’t, recheck your plug connections and grounding.
