S4 Patrol Tail Light Installation Guide
Important Notes
Professional installation recommended.
Test tail lights and wiring prior to installation.
Overview:
Our Bushdoof Plug & Play Tail Lights for the Nissan GU Y61 Series 4 Patrol are a full LED replacement for the factory units. On Patrols fitted with functional factory tail lights, the left-hand side plugs straight in and the right-hand side picks up its inputs from the left. Please note that many Australian-delivered Patrols (most often DX and ST models) left the factory without functional tail lights, running rear-bar mounted lights only. If that is your vehicle, you will simply run power up to the tail lights yourself (covered below).
What you'll need:
- Phillips screwdriver
- Trim removal tools (if required)
- Socket set
- Electrical tape
- Zip ties
- 5-core trailer wire (only if your Patrol has no factory tail wiring)
- Wire strippers and crimp connectors or solder (only if wiring manually)
- Multimeter (optional)
Wire Colour Reference
- Green - Park light and start-up animation
- Yellow - Indicator
- Red - Brake
- White - Reverse
- Grey - Not used
Step 1: Remove Factory Tail Lights
- Check packaging contents, you should have 2x Bushdoof Tail Lights (Left + Right) and the wiring harness.
- Access the rear to reach the tail light mounting screws.
- Remove the screws securing each factory tail light (or rear-bar light).
- Pull the tail light straight backward to release it.
- Disconnect the factory plug (if fitted).
- Ensure no clips, seals, or mounts are damaged during removal.
Step 2: Prepare & Route Wiring
If your Patrol has functional factory tail lights:
- Plug the left-hand tail light straight into the factory plug.
- The right-hand side picks up all of its inputs from the left-hand tail light via the supplied harness.
- Secure the wiring with zip ties, clear of sharp edges and moving parts.
If your Patrol has no factory tail wiring (rear-bar lights only, common on DX and ST):
- Run a length of 5-core trailer wire up from your trailer plug or rear bumper lights to the tail lights.
- Match each wire to the colour reference above (green for park and start-up, yellow for indicator, red for brake, white for reverse).
- Because your inputs come up one side, run a single wire from left to right to carry the indicator across to the other side. Which side you bridge from depends on where you brought your inputs up.
- Your reverse wire is usually already present, so in most cases you only need to bring up both indicators, brake and park.
Step 3: Install Bushdoof Tail Lights
- Position the new tail light onto the vehicle and seat it correctly.
- Reinstall the screws and tighten securely.
- Ensure the housing sits flush against the body.
- Repeat for the opposite side.
Step 4: Test
- Turn the vehicle on and check all lighting functions:
Tail/Park, Brake, Indicator, Reverse, and Hazard lights. - Ensure all functions operate correctly with no dash warnings.
- Confirm all connections are secure and insulated.
